Gospel of Matthew – They Shall Call His Name Emmanuel

04-They-Shall-Call-His-Name-Emmanuel

This Bible Study jumps into the intrinsic significance of the name Emmanuel, God with us. Today, God being with us is certainly for our encouragement as believers. But God being WITH us means much more than just God being for us.

The attached slides first speak of the meaning of Emmanuel, “God with Us”. Then They go on to speak of the Presence of the Triune God, the Spirit of Reality. Certainly, God being with His people is a theme throughout the whole book of Matthew and even the whole New Testament.

The deepest appreciation and most intimate application of God being with us is His dwelling in our spirit. We must know our spirit, the dwelling place of God today. This is what is covered in the final slide. It is covered in a way that college students can relate.

God’s intention, from His dealings with His people in the Old Testament, through the birth of Jesus as Emmanuel and His wonderful salvation, is that He wants to be one with man. Although not included in the slides, we leave you with this powerful verse from the concluding sentences of the whole Bible.

Revelation 21:3 And I heard a loud voice out of the throne, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will tabernacle with them, and they will be His peoples, and God Himself will be with them and be their God.

I Enjoyed the Meaning of the Name Jesus

Utah-Christians-on-Campus-Testimony-Story-I-Enjoyed-the-Meaning-of-the-name-Jesus

Hi, I’m Shennen and I would like to share what I enjoyed in our last Bible Study.  In this last Bible study I enjoyed the meaning of the name Jesus. Jesus means Jehovah our Savior or Jehovah our salvation. But what does Jehovah mean? In Exodus 3:14, God says to Moses, I am who I am…Thus you shall say to the children of Israel that I AM has sent me to you. In this verse we see that Jesus is the I AM. He is whatever we need. As Jehovah our Savior not only does He wash away our sins He also imparts His life into us so that we may be empowered to live for God. – Shennen

Gospel of Matthew – You Shall Call His Name Jesus

03-You-Shall-Call-His-Name-Jesus-1

And she will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins. – Matthew 1:21

In this Bible study we cover three things.

  1. The Meaning of the Name of Jesus
  2. The Double Cure
  3. Calling on the Name of the Lord to be Saved

The material is comprised primarily of verses. The fellowship in the groups when going over this Bible study together should bring out the depths, the riches, and the application for us today.

On the last slide, you’ll find a charge to sing Psalm 116:12-13. Here is the music and lyrics:

What shall I give unto the Lord
For all, for all, for all He’s done for me?
I’ll take the cup of salvation,
And call, and call, and call upon the name
  of the Lord.

Gospel of Matthew – Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham

02-Jesus-Christ-the-Son-of-David-the-Son-of-Abraham

There is much more content we could have included in the slides. This will become evident as you go through this Bible study. If you are with a group, pull from the collective knowledge of the group to get a fuller picture of the background of the son of David and the son of Abraham.

Finally, turn your knowledge and appreciation of Christ into prayer. Contacting the Lord is the only way to make all the blessings of the Bible real to us.

Gospel of Matthew – The Gospel of the Kingdom

01-The-Gospel-of-the-Kingdom

What is the gospel of the kingdom?

First, it seems that many people treat the word “gospel” as “truth”, or “accepted doctrine”. But actually, gospel means good news. We are bringing good news to the University of Utah! Second, is the good news of-the-kingdom the same as the-good-news in general? No, the “gospel of the kingdom” is used in particular to denote a certain gospel. Jesus Christ is God the creator who became a man. Coming as a man, he preached this gospel.

From that time Jesus began to proclaim and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near. – Matthew 4:17

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole inhabited earth for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come. – Matthew 24:14

In this Bible Study we will cover 3 points. Join us in fellowship! All are welcome!

  • Jesus and the Kingdom of the heavens
  • Regeneration for the Kingdom of God
  • Lord, Establish Your Kingdom Within Me

The Gospel According to Matthew

00-The-Gospel-According-to-Matthew

The topic of the whole New Testament is the wonderful person of Jesus Christ. The first book of the New Testament is the Gospel According to Matthew. In this first book, the Lord Jesus is presented as the King.

To begin this series, we have to know that we are made with three parts, our body, our soul, and our spirit. The Lord Jesus as the King comes into this deepest part, our human spirit, to live and to reign there.

A typical Bible study in this series presents something about Jesus Christ, then something about what He wants or what He is doing, and finally, what we can do about it. Our goal is never to just learn something for our mere knowledge. Rather, we want to contact the living God in Christ Jesus that He might gain what He’s after in us and through us.

About the Believers

About-The-Believers

Intro

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, to those who believe into His name, – John 1:12

Are you a believer? How did you come to believe? Tell us. We’d like to hear from you. Let’s have some mutual fellowship for some mutual encouragement.

  • If you would like to know what we believe in, here at Christians on Campus, check out this other excellent post: The Common Faith.

This Bible study, About the Believers, is not meant to be exhaustive. It’s meant to be a place where there can be that mutual encouragement. How about this: first, be encouraged by simply reading one of the most powerful passages in the whole Bible, the end of Romans chapter 8. When you’re done with that, jump to the Bible studies below.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.  29 Because those whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the Firstborn among many brothers;  30 And those whom He predestinated, these He also called; and those whom He called, these He also justified; and those whom He justified, these He also glorified.  31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?  32 Indeed, He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not also with Him freely give us all things?  33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies.  34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ Jesus who died and, rather, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.  35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or anguish or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword?  36 As it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; we have been accounted as sheep for slaughter.”  37 But in all these things we more than conquer through Him who loved us.  38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor things present nor things to come nor powers  39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Our Human Spirit – Speaking by the Spirit of Faith

Speaking-by-the-spirit-of-faith

God is a speaking God. In the beginning He created all things by speaking (Genesis 1:3). As the word of God, He came to be a man (John 1:14), speaking the words of eternal life (John 6:68). In the Acts and Epistles, God continues to speak through His believers. At the end of the Bible, God the Spirit speaks together as one with the Bride, the church.

All God’s children can and should speak for God. It is primarily by our speaking that we are the many witnesses of Christ. We are ambassadors of Christ and God is surely with us. Furthermore, we all have been equipped. Thank God! That’s right, we have what we need, our spirit of faith.

Our Human Spirit – The Inner Sense of Life and Peace

Have you ever wondered if what you are thinking, or if what you are feeling comes from God? Is your train of thought according to God and are your actions according to God?…or is it just you?

We have previously mentioned that there is a sense deep within us believers, and that if we pay attention to this sense and follow it, then we will be walking according to the spirit. In this Bible study we explore what this sense is like. We want everyone to be able to say, “Yes, this thing is of the Lord,” or “No, this thing is not of the Lord.” How? By the inner sense of life and peace.

Our Human Spirit – The Faculties of the Soul under the Control of the Spirit

The Lord Jesus died for us on the cross and resurrected from the dead.
He came to live in us and we are now the place where He dwells. Hallelujah!

But He is after much more. He wants to be expressed through us.
Consider these questions and dive into this Bible study which is full of revelation.

  • Is our soul, with its mind, emotion, and will, in the way of the Lord’s goal?
  • Or is our soul useful to the Lord?
  • When we lose our soul-life, what are we left with?
  • What is the interaction between the spirit and the soul?

Our Human Spirit – Spiritual versus Soulish

Our-Human-Spirit-Spiritual-versus-Soulish

1 Thessalonians 5:23 helps us to see that there are 3 different parts of man, the spirit, the soul, and the body. Then Hebrews 4:12 tells us that we can divide the soul from the spirit using the knife of the word of God.

You might say, yes, indeed, but now we ask the question, “Why?” Why is it important to know the difference between the soul and the spirit and why do we need to divide the soul from the spirit?

Actually, as Christians, if we don’t break-through in this Bible study on “Spiritual versus Soulish”, then we are in great peril. If we only use our soul, we’ll end up being a certain kind of person.

Our Human Spirit – Be Filled in Spirit

Our-Human-Spirit-Be-Filled-in-Spirit

To live as born again Christians in the church we need a certain kind of living, a living of being filled in spirit.

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness, but be filled in spirit – Ephesians 5:18

To be drunk with wine in our physical body causes us to become dissolute [this is to be lax in morals], but to be filled in our spirit with Christ, with the fullness of God, causes us to overflow with Christ in speaking, singing, psalming, and giving thanks to God (vv. 19-20) and also causes us to subject ourselves to one another (v. 21). – Footnote on Ephesians 5:18 from the Recovery Version of the Bible.

It is our sincere desire that the Christians on campus be filled in spirit. To this end, we offer this humble Bible Study as an aid to all who desire to be filled in spirit.
